19/12/2015 - NYE 2015/16 South Island road trip day #2 - Picton to Lake Rototi

Day 2 - after a long day yesterday of waiting to leave, shopping and a ferry ride, we got a good nights sleep in the van last night.  Surprisingly even though it was quite chilly last night, the the van is so incredibly warm.   With three of my windows having permanent 2 layer thick thermal pocket curtains on them, and with all of them having insulated solar screens on them, it was so incredibly warm in the van last night.  In fact, it was a wee bit too warm.  However if I were camping in the winter alone on a cold snowy night, I'll definitely appreciate this.   One thing we haven't hit yet with regard sleeping in it, our sandflies and/or mosquitoes.

So anyway, woke up and had breakfast.   There's a simple milk and hot porridge breakfast with some apples.   Oh yeah of course we also made some coffee, isn't that not obligatory ;)   so we headed southwest towards Blenheim.   We stopped the Wairau River and drove out onto the stones what is the riverbed.  I realise this was an awesome place to go fishing, however I'll come back there on my way back to the ferry.  We staffed a few photos of the van and move onward toward Blenheim.

We got the Blenheim it was quite a busy little town.  This is to be expected.  It was hot, strong sun, and had a real feel a summer in the air!  It felt good!   During this quick stop in Blenheim I got my fishing license (an annual license) and we got some information at the local iSite.  For those of you not in New Zealand, iSites are information centers set up by the local regional councils to help tourists and locals alike for sightseeing.  Moving onward now, we left Blenheim and went south.

We drove down NZ State Rte 63 from Blenheim to the junction of 63 and State Rte 6 West.   Although this route was very scenic, is extremely hot and dry, there was nowhere particular to stop and rest out of the sun.  So we kept driving.
